Possibly West Saxon form of Anglian *breoðen, from *bruþą (“broth”) + diminutive suffix Proto-Germanic *-īną (small brewing), or from an unrecorded weak verb Proto-Germanic *bruþijaną (“to make a broth”) + noun suffix Proto-Germanic *-īniz (as in byrgen, selen), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰru-to-, from the same root as Old English brēowan, from Proto-Germanic *brewwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁-, *bʰreh₁w-.
