From Middle Dutch buten, from Old Dutch *būtan, from Proto-West Germanic *biūtan (“outside of, around, without, except”), equivalent to be- + uit + -en. Cognate to English but, Luxembourgish baussen, West Frisian bûten, Saterland Frisian buute (“without”), Dutch Low Saxon buten.
