From Ottoman Turkish بوڭامق (buŋamak). Compare Old Turkic [script needed] (muŋa-, to become sick, go through difficulty), from buŋ/muŋ ("hardship, illness, stupidity")[1]. Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *buŋ (suffering). See bun and bön.
