Etymology
Compare Vietnamese cộ (“(colloquial, of the body or a part of the body) big in size”) and Old Chinese 巨 (OC *ɡaʔ) "great, huge" (ZS) (SV: cự).
Usage notes
Cồ meaning "big, large" is now only found fossilized in such compounds as gà cồ (“large chicken > mature male chicken, rooster, cock, gamecock”), vịt cồ (“large duck > mature male duck, drake”), cồ cộ (“large locust; large, shiny-black cicada (dialectal)”).[1]
