Compare Vietnamese cộ ((colloquial, of the body or a part of the body) big in size) and Old Chinese (OC *ɡaʔ) "great, huge" (ZS) (SV: cự).

Usage notes

Cồ meaning "big, large" is now only found fossilized in such compounds as gà cồ (large chicken > mature male chicken, rooster, cock, gamecock), vịt cồ (large duck > mature male duck, drake), cồ cộ (large locust; large, shiny-black cicada (dialectal)).[1]
