From Siculo-Arabic *cacoccia, from Arabic خُرْشُوف (ḵuršūf) (definite form الْخُرْشُوف (al-ḵuršūf)). Based on the forms *carsoffa (*carsòffula) that gave palatized *carcioffa (carciòffula), then another metathetic *carcoccia (carcòcciula)[1]. Compare Spanish alcachofa, Portuguese alcachofra, Catalan carxofa, Italian carciofo.
