Mainly used in the Catholic southern Netherlands, although the concept has spread to the Protestant north in recent years, along with the celebration of the Catholic festival of carnival. Most names are rather local and, with the exception of those of major towns, cannot be counted on to be known to many outside of the town's vicinity.
