From Vulgar Latin *cuniclus (compare Occitan conilh, Spanish conejo, Italian coniglio), from Latin cunīculus originally “burrow”, from Ancient Greek κύνικλος (kúniklos), of uncertain (probably Iberian) origin; compare Basque untxi (“rabbit”), Mozarabic conchair (“greyhound”).
