From Old Irish cruithnecht, from a compound whose second element is Proto-Celtic *nixtos (winnowed, wheat) (compare Welsh gwe-nith (wheat) from *uɸo-nixtos), from Proto-Indo-European *neyk- (to winnow). Cognate with Manx curnaght and Scottish Gaelic cruithneachd.
