Borrowed from Ancient Greek κοκκύμηλον (kokkúmēlon), from κόκκῠξ (kókkux, cuckoo) + μῆλον (mêlon, apple, any fruit from a tree). The ending in -i could be a consequence of dissimilation from Sicilian meli, inherited from Latin mel.
