cype
Old English
Etymology
Origin Uncertain.
Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *kūpijā (“bucket”), diminutive of Proto-West Germanic *kūpu (“tub, vat”).
Alternatively, from Proto-West Germanic *kīpā, from Proto-Germanic *kīpǭ, *kippǭ (“basket”), from Proto-Indo-European *gey- (“to bend, twist”); related to Middle Dutch kiepe (“basket”), Middle Low German kîpe (“basket”), Old Norse kippa (“basket”). Compare also Norwegian kaup (“crate, wooden box”).
