Likely from Late Ottoman Turkish درنك (dernek), a learned borrowing from a medieval Turkic language, such as Karakhanid تِرْناكْ (tẹrnek, people's gathering, a public assembly), from earlier *tẹringek, from *tērin-, a passive/reflexive form of Common Turkic *tēr- (to gather, collect).
