Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish ضلالت (dalalet, being astray or lost; error), from Arabic ضَلَالَة (ḍalāla), verbal noun of ضَلَّ (ḍalla, to go astray; to lose). The initial d is unusual; more often ض () in Arabic becomes z when borrowed into in Turkish.
