Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish ضلالت‎ (dalalet, “being astray or lost; error”), from Arabic ضَلَالَة‎ (ḍalāla), verbal noun of ضَلَّ‎ (ḍalla, “to go astray; to lose”). The initial d is unusual; more often ض‎ (ḍ) in Arabic becomes z when borrowed into in Turkish.
