From earlier embrunals by metathesis from *umbrenals, from Ancient Greek ὀμβρινά τρήματα (ombriná trḗmata, holes for rain), from ὀμβρινός (ombrinós, of rain) from ὄμβρος (ómbros, rainstorm) and τρῆμα (trêma, hole).
