  1. (linguistics) A phonological process that adds rhotic (R-like) sounds in some dialects of Mandarin Chinese. The suffix usually changes the pronunciation of the syllable
Examples

In Mandarin (jīn) is pronounced /t͡ɕin⁵⁵/
but 今兒今儿 (jīnr) with the erhua is pronounced /t͡ɕiə̯ɻ⁵⁵/.
