Usage notes

  • The spelling eskwela is discouraged by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) under its new orthographical rules because it uses three or more consecutive consonants, which do not follow the native syllable structures of consonant-vowel or consonant-vowel-consonant. Words spelled with ng and a consonant, and vice versa counts as two consonants, and are exempted. Exceptions apply in loanwords where it is originally spelled with a triphthong but respelling them to follow Tagalog syllable structure is not applicable. See Appendix:Tagalog orthography for more details.
