Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish اتمك, ایتمك (etmek), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ēt-[1]. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰃𐱅 (ét-, to make), Azerbaijani etmək, Bashkir итеү (itew), Chuvash ту (tu), Crimean Tatar этмек (etmek), Karachay-Balkar этерге (eterge), Kazakh ету (etu), Khakas идерге (iderge), Kumyk этмек (etmek), Kyrgyz этүү (etüü), Nogai этуьв (étüv), Tatar итү (itü) (including siberian), Turkmen etmek, Uyghur ﺋﻪﺗﻤﻪﻙ (etmek, әтмәк), etc.

Verb

etmek (third-person singular simple present eder)

  1. to do; to make
  2. to equal, make
    Sonunda Parti iki ile ikinin beş ettiğini anons eder, sen de buna inanman gerekiyordu.
    In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.
  3. (auxiliary verb) Forms active verbs from adjectives and nouns, especially Arabic verbal nouns.

Usage notes

  • This verb is used in conjunction with foreign nouns or adjectives for the formation of compound verbs, similar to English make in make amends. For example dikkat etmek (to be careful), dans etmek (to dance), keşfetmek (to discover). With native Turkish words the verb-forming suffix -la / -le is typically used instead.
