From Arabic عادَ‎ (ʿāda, “he returned, did again”). Compare مَا عادَ (mā ʿāda, “he stopped, did no more”), which has also become an adverb in many dialects and may be construed with pronominal suffixes in some of them. Compare also Hebrew עוד‎ (ʿōd, “still”).
