Etymology

From underlying Arabic عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْء (ʿalā ʾayyi šayʾ, literally on what thing). Equivalent to għal (for) + *iex (what); see xiex for the latter. Cognate with Moroccan Arabic علاش (ʕlāš, why).
