Etymology
From underlying Arabic عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْء (ʿalā ʾayyi šayʾ, literally “on what thing”). Equivalent to għal (“for”) + *iex (“what”); see xiex for the latter. Cognate with Moroccan Arabic علاش (ʕlāš, “why”).
