get-back coach (plural get-back coaches)

  1. (US, sports) A coach who is assigned the task of ensuring another coach (usually the head coach) gets out of the way of the referees during games.
    2019 February 2, Morgan Moriarty, Sean McVay has a get-back coach. Clemson’s pioneering get-back coach explains the job:
    “I was probably the most difficult one to deal with when I was on the field, because you’re always trying to get closer to the action,” McVay told NFL Films. “As a coach, I always try to be aware of our get-back coach.”
