Etymology 2

From Middle Welsh gwasgawd, gwasgaut from Proto-Celtic *uɸoskātom. Cognate with Irish foscadh (“shelter; shade”). Equivalent to go-, gwo-, gwa- (“under”) +‎ ysgod (“shade”).
