From Ancient Greek ὑποκοριστικός (hupokoristikós), from ὑποκορίζομαι (hupokorízomai, I speak in the language of children), from ὑπό (hupó, below) + κορίζομαι (korízomai, I act like a girl), from κόρη (kórē, girl).
