Etymology
The form is the regularly expected outcome of Arabic أَدَّى (ʔaddā, “to lead, guide”), from which the sense can be derived through the idea of a celestial body or lantern which guides the way. Reinforcing semantic influence by أَضاءَ (ʔaḍāʔa, “to shine”) may be assumed. Alternatively, a derivation directly from the last-mentioned verb is also possible, but it requires two irregular phonetic developments. Firstly the second radical must have been restored as a consonant, yielding *أَضْوَأَ (*ʔaḍwaʔa), يُضْوِئُ (yuḍwiʔu), and then the cluster -dw- must have been assimilated to -dd-.
