From Old Portuguese illa, from Old Catalan illa, from Vulgar Latin *īsula, from Latin īnsula, whence also English isle. Doublet of inherited ínsua, from Old Portuguese inssoa, as well as the learned borrowing ínsula; both of these are rare or specialist.
