Morus bassanus in Nederlandsche vogelen, 1770-1829
Etymology
Superficially, the name means "John of Ghent", but gent here is unrelated to the name of the Belgian city and is in fact cognate with English gannet instead. The origin of the initial two syllables remains unexplained. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
