From Spanish carabao, from Waray-Waray karabaw[1], from Malay kerbau, from Proto-Malayic *kAr(ə)baw, from East Austroasiatic (Mon-Khmer)[2]. Before the coming of the Spaniards, the native Tagalog term used to refer to the animal is anwang. The word kalabaw itself does not appear in the earliest Tagalog dictionaries.
