Originally only “spherical object”, thought to be borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin coccum (“scarlet berry, gall”).[1]. However, due to strong semantical parallels and on geographic grounds, it is perhaps more likely to be derived directly from Ancient Greek κόκκος (kókkos, “grain, seed, berry”). Compare koqe.
