Etymology

In the sense “to graft” from Arabic لَقَّمَ (laqqama, to feed a mouthful), from لُقْمة (luqma), whence Maltese loqma (morsel). The figurative use for “to vaccinate” exists in many languages; compare English inoculate (in an 18th-century description of the Graeco-Turkish practice also ingraft).
