From Old Catalan ludria, from Vulgar Latin *lutria, from Latin lutra, from Proto-Italic *utrā, from Proto-Indo-European *udréh₂, the feminine form of *udrós, from the root *wed-. Compare Occitan luria~loira, Spanish lutria~nutria, Asturian llóndriga. The Vulgar Latin form was influenced by Ancient Greek ἐνυδρίς (enudrís).
