1. a usually three-year school in the Finnish school system that prepares the students for academic studies (grades 10 to 12); corresponds to gymnasium (Europe), senior high school (US) and high school in some other places

• In the current Finnish school system lukio is preceded by nine years of peruskoulu. Until the 1970s there were four years of kansakoulu followed by five years of keskikoulu. keskikoulu and lukio were together called oppikoulu. Those who did not pass the exam for oppikoulu continued in kansakoulu and kansalaiskoulu for another four to five years.
