Etymology 1

Uncertain. Nascentes proposes that the term comes from a metathesis of *maracico, from Spanish moracico (sandpiper), from Celtic môrbik (“sea bird”), being first attested in c. 13th century.[1] Compare Galician mazarico and Asturian mazaricu.
