Etymology

From Proto-Cariban *môkɨ (animate singular distal demonstrative pronoun) + *-jamo (collective suffix). Analogous forms in other Cariban languages are similarly formed with various collective and emphatic suffixes in different orders. Compare Trió mëkïjamo, Wayana mëkjam, Waiwai mïkyam, Galibi Carib mòkan.
