Inherited from Old Polish miedzy, from Proto-Slavic *meďi, loc. sg. of *meďa (“border, boundary”), from Proto-Indo-European *médʰyos. Cf. Proto-Slavic *meďu (“between, loc. dual”). The nasal vowel was added later due to the preceding m-.[1]
