From miell, because of its color; from Proto-Indo-European *h₂elbʰ (“white”). Structurally identical with Lithuanian melmuõ (“kidney stone”), Old Saxon melm (“sand, dust”) and Old High German melm (“dust”), both Proto-Germanic forms from *malmaz, *malmōn.
