From Ottoman Turkish محافظه (muhafaza), from Arabic مُحَافَظَة (muḥāfaẓa), verbal noun of حَافَظَ (ḥāfaẓa, “to preserve, protect”). Compare Azerbaijani mühafizə (“preservation”).
