From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-na-s (“stay, rest”). Cognate with Burmese နား (na:). Possibly also related with Old Chinese 西 (OC *sɯːl) ("west") and Tibetan མནལ་བ (mnal ba, “sleep (honorific)”) (Hill(2019)). Compare Zaiwa no.

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r/g-na (“ear”). Cognate with Burmese နား (na:, “ear”), Tibetan རྣ་བ (rna ba, “ear”), Old Chinese 耳 (OC *njɯʔ), Sichuan Yi ꅳ (hnap, “ear”) and Jingpho na. Compare Zaiwa no and Hpon ă nà.
