naršyti

Lithuanian

Etymology

Related to neršti (to spawn (of fish)). Semantic development was likely "multitude of fish swimming downstream" → "ransack" → "rummage" → "browse". There is also a sense "to be angry" of neršti, but this is from a different etymology.

Verb

naršýti (third-person present tense nar̃šo, third-person past tense nar̃šė)

  1. to ransack, rummage
  2. to browse
