From Proto-Vietic *ɲuːʔ (to drink), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɲuuʔ (to suck up, to drink); cognate with Koho nyu (to drink alcohols), Samtao ɲɯ́ʔ, Teressa nyūḵ, Santali ᱧᱩ (ñu, to drink).
