oikein-merkki

1. A symbol consisting of a slash (/) and two dots, one on the upper left side of the slash and the other on the lower right side. Alternative way to describe the symbol is that it's like a %-sign in which the o's are replaced with dots. This symbol is used in Finland to indicate agreement, correctness or acknowledgement. When ticking a box, an X (rasti) is normally used as the sign of acceptance.

In Finland, the (✓)-sign (tick or checkmark in English) is normally used to signify "incorrect" or "unacceptable". The habit has its origins in the old parish registers which had a column for registering parishioners' reading skills. X in that column meant "good", Y "fair", %-sign with dots "acceptable", and V marked "failed". V is also the first letter of the word väärin (“false, incorrect”).
