Etymology

From Old Spanish oxalá, from Arabic لَوْ شَاءَ اللّٰهُ‎ (law šāʔa allāhu, “and may God will it”). Compare Portuguese oxalá and Arabic إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ‎ (ʔin šāʔa llāhu).
