From Old Spanish páxaro, pássaro, from Vulgar Latin *passarum < Latin passer (“sparrow”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *p(e)t-tro- (“who flies, bird”), from *peth₂- (“to fly”). Compare Portuguese pássaro.
