From Proto-Germanic *faigijaz or Proto-Indo-Iranian *paiyas. Compare Old Norse feigr (“near death”) and Sanskrit वाजपेय (vāja-péya, “ritual drink when sacrificing, potion of strength”). Cognate with Finnish peijaiset, peijaat, and Karelian peijahat.
