Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *potьběga. Possibly a compound of otherwise unattested *potь (husband) (from Proto-Indo-European *pótis (master, husband)) and *běga from *běgati (to run away, flee). Cognate with Russian подпега (podpega) and Czech podběha.
