Etymology

A phrase consisting of two items that each mean "that's final", the first being punktur (period) and the second basta, from Danish basta, from Italian basta (enough!).

Basta is not used in any other contexts in Icelandic, and so many speakers (particularly children) instead say punktur og pasta (literally period and pasta).

Interjection

punktur og basta

  1. and that's final!, end of discussion!
