Limburgish

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ʁyə̯/
  • Rhymes: -yə̯

Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *hrau, from Proto-Germanic *hrawaz. The umlaut is unusual (compare Luxembourgish réi). It might be that the inflected stem, which was originally *hraw-, was reformed locally to *hrōj- (elsewhere hrō-, hrōw-, hrāw-). Compare Limburgish rüh, another term that has the same umlaut.

Adjective

rüë (masculine rüë, feminine rüë, comparative mië rüë or rüjjer, superlative rüëtste) (Eupen)

  1. raw (uncooked)
  2. unprocessed, crude, raw
  3. (figuratively) unrefined, rude, brutal
