  1. (transitive) To impart meaning where it is not obvious or does not exist.
    It was just a passing remark; you're reading too much into it.
  2. (transitive, law) Of a court or ruling, to establish that a legislative text should be understood to include certain words or concepts not explicitly found there, by necessary implication and/or to obey constitutional imperatives or similar.
    The Supreme Court of Canada read "sexual orientation" into section 15 of the Charter of Rights in Egan v. Canada.
