Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *rugiz, whence also Old English ryġe. Old Frisian rogga, Old Saxon roggo, Old Dutch *roggo, and Old High German rocko are from the related West Germanic form *roggō. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wrugʰyo- (compare Russian рожь (rožʹ) and Old Prussian rugis).
