sadid

Maltese

Etymology

Formally from Arabic صَدِيد (ṣadīd, pus, ichor), but the sense from صَدَأ (ṣadaʾ, rust). The latter could easily have become *sadd in Maltese, thus being merged with the root of the first-mentioned word. Semantically both refer to impure substances forming on surfaces. Compare the same in Algerian Arabic صديد (ṣdīd, rust). Note also the rhyme with ħadid (iron).
