Pela

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ta̠³⁵/

Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ta-t (put, place). Cognate with Burmese ထား (hta:, put), Tibetan འདེགས་པ ('degs pa, put), Old Chinese (OC *taʔ, *tas, *da, *taɡ, *daɡ), Sichuan Yi (da, put) and Jingpho da (put). Compare Zaiwa dvo and Longchuan Achang tʰɔ³¹. A parallel grammaticalisation with Chinese (put) has occurred ("to put" > "indicating continuous motion").

Verb

ta̠³⁵ (reduced form tə̠̆-)

  1. put, place
  2. (auxiliary verb) particle indicating the present continuous condition of the preceding verb
    ŋa⁵⁵ sɛ̃³⁵va³¹ va⁵⁵ mɛ̃³¹ ŋji³¹ ta̠³⁵ a⁵⁵.
I am at a Tai village.

Etymology 2

Possibly related with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-t(y)ak (rise, ascend, climb, upper part), although another verb taʔ³¹ (ascend, attend (school)) matching this better exists. Cognate with Burmese (hta., rise, get up). Compare Lhao Vo to", Zaiwa dvoq and Longchuan Achang tʰɔʔ⁵⁵.

Alternative forms

  • ta̠ʔ⁵⁵

Verb

ta̠³⁵

  1. get up, rise
Usage notes

Etymology 1 and 2 have become homonyms due to historical sound change in Pela (cf. Zaiwa dvo vs. dvoq). However, since both of them can form compounds with the verb ja̠p⁵⁵ (sleep), the compound verb ja̠p⁵⁵ ta̠³⁵ is confusing and its correct meaning can be only understood with the help of contexts.

Derived terms

Etymology 3

Causative verb of ta³¹ (eat), cf. Old Chinese (OC *lɯɡs, *ɦljɯɡ). See ta³¹ for more information.
