Cognate to Lithuanian šálti (“to freeze”), Sanskrit शिशिर (śíśira, “cold, cool”), Old Norse háll (“slippery”). Alternatively, a derivative of thellë, with an intermediate meaning of “darkness; storm” to “harsh cold”.
