their asses

English

Pronoun

their asses (personal pronoun; the third person, (at least) nominative/objective/reflexive cases, plural)

  1. (vulgar, slang, the third person plural) they (in the plural); them (in the plural); themselves (in the plural).
    Their asses are always late.
He'll teach their asses a lesson.
They better haul their asses out of bed.

Usage notes

  • The singular counterpart is their ass, in addition to his ass and her ass. See singular they and themself regarding grammatical number.
  • It is not unusual for themselves to be used also in the singular under the influence of formal agreement versus notional agreement: Anyone who steps down from there might hurt themselves. Such use of their asses is also possible but less common. Compare also usage of y'all and all y'all that (in some variants) preserves some inflectional distinction for singular, plural, and indefinite.
  • See ass ยง Usage notes regarding the metonymy (and the potential reflexivity).
